—   THE SHORT ANSWER

The rush to rename SEO has created an impressive amount of fog. One week the answer is AEO. The next week it is GEO. Then someone promises a special file, a block of schema or a flood of machine-written pages that will make a business impossible for AI to ignore. The useful answer is less dramatic: make your site technically available, genuinely specific and worth citing.

First, the reassuring part: the foundation did not disappear

Google’s 2026 guidance says its generative search experiences still rely on the core Search index and ranking systems. In plain language, AI Overviews and AI Mode do not require a separate version of your website. Crawlability, useful page structure, relevant internal links, accurate business information and a good experience still matter.

That does not mean nothing changed. People are asking longer, more specific questions and receiving synthesized answers. A generic page has fewer reasons to be selected when a system can retrieve stronger sources. The bar is not ‘more content.’ The bar is a more useful source.

The content worth finding is rarely the content anyone could have written

Google now uses the phrase non-commodity content. That is a helpful test. If the article could sit on a hundred competitors’ websites after changing the company name, it is probably too interchangeable.

For a service business, useful original material may include:

  • the questions clients ask before they are ready to buy;
  • the tradeoffs you explain during a project;
  • photos, examples or measurements from real work;
  • a checklist built from mistakes you have actually seen;
  • clear boundaries about what your service does and does not solve.

Expertise becomes visible through specifics. A tidy paragraph about ‘quality service’ cannot compete with a clear explanation of how you make a decision, what evidence you review and what changes the recommendation.

Make the important facts easy to verify

AI visibility is not just an article problem. A business also needs a coherent identity across its own site and trusted profiles. The business name, services, contact details, authorship and real areas of expertise should not contradict one another from page to page.

Structured data can reinforce those facts. It can identify an organization, article, service or breadcrumb trail in a machine-readable format. It cannot turn vague copy into authority, and Google does not guarantee a special search appearance simply because valid schema is present. Mark up what the visitor can actually see. Keep it factual. Validate it after publishing.

Do the technical work that lets good content participate

A strong answer cannot be retrieved from a page that is blocked, accidentally set to noindex, buried behind a broken link or duplicated across several URLs. Before creating more, check the basics:

  • important pages return a successful status and have one canonical URL;
  • titles and headings describe the real purpose of each page;
  • navigation and internal links connect related services and expertise;
  • images have useful context and load efficiently;
  • mobile visitors can read, navigate and complete the next step;
  • Search Console can crawl and index the pages you intend to publish.

This work is not glamorous, but it prevents good material from becoming invisible for avoidable reasons.

Measure visibility without pretending every impression is a lead

Search reporting is expanding as generative experiences mature. Use the available Search Console data to understand which pages and questions earn visibility, then connect that to actions you can observe on your own site: qualified form submissions, calls, downloads or visits to decision-stage pages.

A single ranking is not a strategy. Look for patterns over time. Are people finding a useful service explanation? Are they arriving on an article and moving to a related service? Are branded searches growing? Did a page earn impressions but fail to help the visitor take a sensible next step? Those questions produce better work than chasing a weekly AI-visibility score.

A practical 30-day starting point

  1. Week one: confirm indexing, canonicals, mobile usability and measurement on the pages that matter most.
  2. Week two: rewrite one service page around the actual decisions a buyer needs to make.
  3. Week three: publish one experience-led answer with examples only your business can provide.
  4. Week four: connect the article, service page, author and related proof with clear internal links; then record a baseline in Search Console.

That is not a shortcut. It is a durable system: make the business understandable, make the expertise visible and make every claim earn its place.
